On the 10th November 2017 Joe went to the doctor with a suspected ‘Tummy Bug’, the doctor examined him and found a very small lump so he was sent for an MRI. The results came back and the doctor said they found something on his right kidney, on the 4th of December Joe was admitted to St Vincent’s Hospital for a biopsy, we were given the devastating news that he had Kidney Cancer. Later that week we were told that he had ‘stage 4’ Cancer and it had spread from the Kidney to his Liver, Spine and Thyroid Glands.
On the 10th March Commander Joe Fleming lost his brave battle against this vile disease age 71.
There are far too many people, young and old fighting and dying from Cancer, so his family and friends have decided to do a Dun Laoghaire to Howth ‘Joe Fleming Memorial Walk’ on Saturday 8th September a total of 25.3 km, to raise funds for Cancer Research.
Any Civil Defence Volunteers wishing to take part in the walk or willing to raise money please make contact with our Belgard Unit.
